BRIEF HISTORY:

  • Located in West Lafayette, Indiana, United States.

  • It was established on May 6, 1869, by the Indiana General Assembly.

  • It was named after John Purdue, a Lafayette businessman and philanthropist, who was the principal benefactor.

  • In 1935, Purdue established the first university-owned airport in the United States, known as Purdue University Airport.

DEGREE PROGRAMS:

Undergraduate Majors & Minors:

  • More than 200 undergraduate programs. Some examples: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, AI, Biochemistry, etc.

  • Approximately 190 minors. Purdue University does not have a strict limit on the number of minors a student can pursue in general (Certain exceptions may exist). However, students cannot add a minor that is too closely related to their major, as determined by the College of Science. It’s recommended to consult an academic advisor to ensure multiple minors align with academic goals and graduation timelines. Some examples: Aquatic Sciences, Architectural Engineering, Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry​.

Masters & PhD:

  • The Discovery Park, a 40-acre multidisciplinary research park that includes centers like the Bindley Bioscience Center and the Birck Nanotechnology Center, fosters innovation and collaboration across various fields.

SOME TRADITIONS:

  • Boilermaker Special: The official mascot of Purdue University, a locomotive that symbolizes the school's engineering heritage.

  • Grand Prix: An annual go-kart race known as "The Greatest Spectacle in College Racing," organized by students to raise funds for scholarships.

  • Boilermakers' nickname: originated in the 1890s after a reporter joked that the football team was recruiting tough railroad workers and boilermakers due to their physical strength.

  • Big Bass Drum: Known as the "World’s Largest Drum", it has been a symbol of Purdue’s marching band since 1921, performed at major athletic events and parades.
