Carnegie Mellon University was founded in 1900 by industrialist Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools. Its initial purpose was to provide practical training for the sons and daughters of Pittsburgh’s working-class families. In 1912, it became the Carnegie Institute of Technology, awarding its first bachelor's degrees.
-
In 1967, the school merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, a private research foundation, forming what we now know as Carnegie Mellon University. Over its century-long history, Carnegie Mellon has grown into one of the most prestigious institutions worldwide, blending excellence in technology, the arts, and the humanities.
