Who can apply in Canada?

Students from around the world are welcome to apply to Canadian universities. However, the process and requirements may differ depending on whether you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or an international student.
International students can apply to Canadian universities at various levels, such as undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs, provided they meet the specific admission criteria of the institution.
Where to apply?
-
OUAC (Ontario Universities Application Centre)
The Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) is the main platform for applying to undergraduate programs at universities in Ontario. This is the preferred system for students applying to multiple Ontario institutions.
OUAC: https://www.ouac.on.ca/
This platform is used by:
1. Canadian citizens and permanent residents applying to undergraduate programs in Ontario.
2. International students applying to undergraduate programs at participating Ontario universities.
3. Students applying to certain graduate programs where OUAC is required.
University-Specific Application Portals:
For universities outside Ontario or specific graduate programs, you will apply directly through the university’s official application portal. Each university will have its application system, and requirements may vary.
For example:
1. Apply directly on the University of British Columbia's website for undergraduate and graduate programs: https://www.you.ubc.ca/
2. McGill University has its own system for international students: https://www.mcgill.ca/
Make sure to check each university’s requirements and deadlines. Most institutions will also charge an application fee.
Study Permit and Immigration Process:

International students must obtain a study permit to pursue their education in Canada. This is done through Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It's important to apply for your study permit as soon as you receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian institution.

Steps to obtain a study permit:
1. Apply online through the IRCC portal.
2. Submit all required documents (passport, acceptance letter, proof of financial support, etc.).
3. Wait for a decision and undergo any necessary biometrics or interviews.
Make sure to check your country-specific requirements for study permits on the IRCC website.

Most Canadian universities require proof of English or French proficiency, depending on the language of instruction. The most common tests for English proficiency are IELTS and TOEFL, while French-speaking institutions may require tests like TEF (Test d’évaluation de français).
English Language Requirements:
1. IELTS (International English Language Testing System): This is widely accepted in Canadian institutions for undergraduate and graduate programs. A minimum score of 6.5 overall, with no band lower than 6.0, is commonly required for most programs.
2. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): The minimum score required is usually around 90-100 for the Internet-based test (iBT).

Are all programs taught in English or French?

While most programs are taught in English or French, some universities offer courses or entire programs in both languages, especially in Quebec and bilingual institutions like the University of Ottawa. For students preferring programs taught in English, there are hundreds of options, while those looking for French instruction will find plenty in Quebec and other Francophone regions.
